JENS MOIRE
Jens Moire is the sum of all parts Music, Photography and Moving Images. His photography has been featured in Dark Beauty Magazine but this interview is focused on his musical side. His high art photography caught my eye numerous times, I needed to find out the man behind the images. I’m pleased to introduce you to him…
Where on our planet are you living now?
In Munich, Germany.
Tell us about some of your influences, your musical start and journey:
I had always been a fan of rock music. In my childhood I heard the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the music of the 60′s. I discovered musicals like The Wall, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and later, at the age of 13 bands such as Metallica, Nirvana, King Crimson and Frank Zappa had an impact on me. It was around this time my interest to play guitar began, I played with a friend in a band studio playing mostly Metallica and Nirvana songs. Some time later, we wrote our own songs and we called ourselves “The Misanthropists”. We were disillusioned, against social conventions and in most areas we had a very different opinion than most. Accordingly our music and our concerts sounded different then the normal as well. After years of struggle against indiscipline of the band members and the futile search for musicians who share the same spirit and have the same goals as myself, I gave it up playing with a band and made music alone with the computer. Within 2 years about 300 song fragments originated, of which 6 pieces were summarized to an EP entitled “Epitome Of Aesthetics”.
Where can our readers listen to this EP?
It can be heard HERE < CLICK
*The other musical material was put together to make 3 albums, one of which is completely finished. It’s just waiting to be mixed and mastered. The songs of the other two albums are waiting to be completed.
I see you have a recent EP, what styles have you generated for this?
The current EP is a mixture of rock, industrial, electronic music and film music elements. Overall it’s very energetic, the lyrics are poems and a description of self -and world- estrangement.
There’s an atmospheric darkness to your music, it’s the perfect soundtrack to you photography work. Give us a description of your sound.
It is mystical, energetic, epic, dreamy, story telling and revealing. I’ve tried to combine rock with electronic elements adding industrial and film music elements. Overall I think I succeeded in this. I often hear from people that they go on a journey when they hear the music. That makes me really happy, because it shows me that I did a great job.
You have a hand in many things such as photography, motion design and music. Lets start with your photography skills, what type of photography do you specialize in?
I’d say my photography strenths are in fine art and fashion. I like conclusive as well as strong concepts yet with interesting stories, no matter what art form. For this reason, it pushes me more and more in the direction of strict conceptual photography.
You also have another skill, what is a motion designer?
This is the one who brings illustrations and graphic elements to live. You can see such things in commercials, trailers, teasers, TV idents, movies and so on.
If you could go back in time, who would you love to photograph?
I would like to accompany Toulouse Lautrec and Degas at the cathouse visits in old France. To portray the prostitutes and the artists who roamed there, well, the whole living at that time, indeed would be ideal.
How do you prefer dinner time?
I like it with several people together to eat, to talk and to drink wine over several hours.
What top 5 artists have influenced you the most and why?
Peter Greenaway, because he makes intelligent movies with a high aesthetic demand. The writing style, the world of thought, the poetry and lifestyle of Henry Miller have influenced me a lot. King Crimson and Nine Inch Nails. Their subjects in lyrics and the kind of compositions is exeptional. Fernando Pessoa, because I never read someone more profound.
What has been the crowning achievement in your career?
That will come.
Tell us about your future plans for photography projects and music:
I can not say anything precise, because a lot is planned, so you just have to wait and see. There is a complete change in style that is coming.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
It’s something mystical as well as attractive, which can take you on a thrilling journey. That profound journey you will remember til you die.
